Dr. Magdi El Shahawy

Dr. Magdi El Shahawy serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director with administrative oversight over the Student-Athlete Academic Services office (SAAS) and the SAAS leadership team that includes Director of SAAS Dr. Denise Kwok, Director of Athletic Academic Support Mimi Butler, Director of Athletic Academic Advising Heather Bell, and Director of Personal Development Programming Whitney Rotrock. Dr. El Shahawy serves on the athletic department’s senior leadership team and is also the Sport Administrator for the baseball program, Track and Field, and Women’s Cross Country team.

During Dr. El Shahawy’s tenure at USC, there has been a steady grown in the athletic department GPA, APR Scores, and Graduation Success Rate.  In the most recent APR, 9 of 20 sports achieved all-time program high APR scores with 4 scoring a perfect 1000 (Men’s Volleyball, Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Golf, and Women’s Tennis). The overall athletic department APR of 991 is also an all-time high. The same trends hold true with the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) were in Fall 2017 the USC Athletic Department GSR of 86% was an all-time GSR high for the 4th year in a row and 9th time in the last 10 years. The current GSR marks a 20% improvement from the initial 66% GSR score for USC student-athletes in 2005.

Dr. El Shahawy has been with the USC Athletic Department since August 2000. Under his leadership, the SAAS staff has grown from 10 to 20 full-time staff members and several programs have been created to better support the close to 600 student-athletes with their academic, personal, and career development needs during their time at USC. These include the Directed Studies program, an enhanced tutorial program, an expanded Personal Development program, the Athlete Career Transition (ACT) program, freshmen success seminars, Summer Personal Development workshops, a Student-Athlete Mentor program, New Student-Athlete Orientation, and an International Student-Athlete Orientation program. Dr. El Shahawy has been active on various committees both in the athletic department and on campus which includes the Athletic Communications Committee, the Athletic Department Health & Wellness Committee, the Athletic Department Culture Committee, the Athlete Career Transition Committee, the Campus Bike Safety Task Force, and the Academic Calendar Committee.

Dr. El Shahawy graduated from Florida State University where he was a varsity letterman on the football team and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Political Science along with a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. in Athletic Administration. He began his career working at Florida State University as an Academic Advisor for the football team and Eligibility Coordinator for the Athletic Department. After spending 7 years working for his alma mater, Dr. El Shahawy went to Michigan State University as the Associate Director of the Student-Athlete Support Services Unit prior to joining the athletic department staff at USC. Born in Queens, New York and raised in Sarasota, Florida, Dr. El Shahawy now resides in Hermosa Beach with his wife Kimberly and their son Micah.
