James R. Pulido

J.R. Pulido has been with Student-Athlete Academic Services since July 2017. In his current role as an Academic Advisor, he tracks initial and continuing eligibility for Football, Lacrosse and Men’s Golf. He also serves as the advisor chair for the Professional Development Committee and Policy and Procedure Committee within SAAS. In his role as an instructor J.R. helps develop curriculum and teaches PHED 165: Freshman Success Seminar, the seminar focuses on academic development, personal development, and career development.

J.R. brings experience from the Southeastern Conference where he worked at the University of Missouri and The University of Arkansas in athletic academics.  In his previous role at the University of Missouri, he was an Academic Coordinator with academic oversight of the Football and Men’s Golf team. J.R. oversaw administrative coverage of the Sheldon Academic Center. He helped create MizzouMade committees and served as the campus liaison for Advisor Forum.  J.R. helped facilitate the Graduate Assistant Program which supervised and helped professional develop the graduate assistants with the MizzouMade academic department.

At the University of Arkansas, J.R. served as a Learning Specialist and Academic Counselor within the Office of Student-Athlete Success working with a multitude of teams. As a learning specialist, J.R. worked primarily with football and basketball leading individualized skill-based learning session focusing on reading comprehension and writing strategies. As an Academic Counselor J.R. had oversight of Baseball and Track & Field academics.  In his counselor role, he facilitated staff meetings and was the International Student Liaison for OSAS.

J.R. is a contributing member of the National Association for Academic Advisors (N4A). He was selected to present at the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program conference (2014) and was a regional and national conference presenter. He previously held roles in the Ethnic Concerns Committee and the LGBTQA Committee and was a member of the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Advisor Panel at the University of Missouri. While at Arkansas he was a contributing member of the Hispanic Resource Group. He is involved in community outreach and has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Principle of Community Mizzou Mile, multiple local community cleanups and served as a counselor educator at The Garcia Arts and Education Center in Corpus Christi, Texas.

J.R. graduated from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi in 2008 where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He was a member and team captain of the Cross Country and Track Field team at the Island University. He continued his education at TAMUCC and completed his Master of Science in Education Psychology with an emphasis in Mental Health Counseling while working as a graduate assistant for Track and Field and Athletic Academic Department.

A native of Columbus, Texas, J.R. currently resides in beautiful DTLA (downtown Los Angeles) with his girlfriend Dani and cat Dev. He is a big part of the downtown Los Angeles running community and in his free time he frequents art galleries, gives graffiti tours and enjoys music and sporting events.
